The authors of this case study investigated how the use of direct polymer additive tooling can improve the overall quality of cups and presented their findings. They carried out a number of tests, the purpose of which was to collect data for potential future uses of this technology.


An optical measurement device was used to take the dimensions of a test series consisting of thirty cups, one drawn from each material configuration. After that, the deviation values were calculated, and a color map was developed to display how the geometry of the cups diverged from that of the CAD model. The deviation values tend to become more extreme whenever there are more drawing operations performed. Nevertheless, there is a decrease in the maximum deviation on a global scale, and the reproducibility of the drawings is improved.


When compared to PA, the deviation values for the first plastic cup drawn from the new PLA toolset are noticeably lower. This is due to the fact that there are fewer cups in the set. During the course of thirty drawing operations, the deviation values of the PA cups gradually increase. However, the values of the first cup from the new toolset are 0.88 mm and -1.48 mm, respectively.
